Battle of the Books

What is the Battle of the Books?
The Battle of the Books program is to encourage reading by all students at the elementary school level. Our students are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints by prominent authors. The game format creates interest and excitement in reading. Through the fun and excitement of the competition, students improve reading skills, mature in their choices of reading materials, and acquire a broader knowledge base. Team practices are conducted weekly, October - December, and bi-weekly in January and February. The county level competition is held at the end of February, during the school day, at Southwest High School. Interested students should see our media specialist, Mrs. Kester.
How can I participate?
Tryouts will be held in the fall of each school year. All students, grades fourth through fifth, may compete for a position on the team. Students will be chosen based on focus and self-motivation and teacher's recommendation. Teams may have up to twelve members, but that is not a requirement. The number selected is at the discretion of the Battle of the Books coaches, Mrs. Kester and Ms. Buckworth.
